Got to keep on – Chemical Brothers
Cinematography:
• Longer shot duration at the beginning then shortened as the video carries on to show the gradual loss of control
• The dancing is no longer as relaxed as the beginning
• Always front-on shots
• Mainly longshots and mid shots done very few close-ups of facial details
• Black background also used to contrast to everyone when they turn into white substance
• Some slo-mo, some sped-up, to fit to music and also to contrast fast and slow to convey different sounds
Editing:
• The dancer’s bodies are slowly made to look like they are distorting in the video, however, it is subtle, to start off the narrative of all the dancers coming together to be one blob of slime/liquid
• The clothing changes, are in time with the first set of chimes to signify the first significant change
• The second time is it the chimes are heard, the dancers are breaking free from the slime like substance that has consumed them all. This could symbolise individuality, coming together to share something that everyone has their own personality separate from others
• Could be fairly low budget however, the clever editing adds to the effects especially when the dances all merged together
• Editing of shorts-cut to fit the beat of the music
• Some of the editing needs to be reviewed as some of the dancers can be seen lip syncing lyrics that aren’t being played at the same time
Sound:
• Some synthesised sound and some distorted sound
• Mostly diegetic, some non-diegetic when people can be heard in the background
• Louder oppressive sound, it becomes more dominant to symbolise power and control until the dancers break free
Mise-en-scène:
• All the dancers have different clothes. More like fancy clothes one might wear to a party, but then they are slowly replaced by more and more white items of clothing
• White background to focus on just the dancers in the frame, this allows for a clear narrative to be told. Clothes aren’t basic, they are all creative and individual to each person, until their clothes turn white
• Physicality of dancers - European/some black/some Asian, quite diverse (representation of minority ethnic groups)
• Finally shows dancers giving into the white slime, could be to symbolise music how it brings everybody together and consumes us all. (the dancers looked happy at the start then they all end up losing control and all wearing the white clothes) (the video ends with everyone being covered by the white, no faces can be seen – possibly to convey the message that music doesn’t discriminate, everyone can be brought together and dance)
• White and black used as opposing tones to show contrast
